It’s the holiday season and families are feeling festive and planning their celebratory get togethers to spend quality time with each other!
But what about your senior in senior care?
The holidays can often cause feelings of isolation as the rest of the family is preparing for parties. Don’t worry — you can help your senior to still feel included this season! Read through our tips below to help your senior feel the love and joy of the holidays, too.
Remember the Past Traditions
Sometimes it can be really nice to just relax and reminisce about the good ol’ days with your senior. Doing this with them is a great idea this holiday season! You can get together past items, like family photos, home videos, and holiday keepsakes to sift through with your senior and family members and just share the memories.
This is a great way to help alleviate any feelings of loneliness your senior may be experiencing.
Create New Holiday Traditions
For your senior in senior care, try creating some new holiday traditions that work better for their lifestyle! Read below for a couple of examples.
Bring the holidays to them. If your senior lives in an assisted living facility or has difficulty leaving their home, you can plan a family gathering that brings the holidays – and the family – to them. These small get togethers will do a world of good for your senior’s mood during the season!
Plan simpler activities. You senior may have trouble any involved or physical holiday activities, so it could be a great time to start planning some easier traditions! Like holiday baking or crafting, for instance.
Virtual Holiday Inclusivity
If your senior lives further away from the family in senior care, it’s okay — you can still get creative and help them to feel included during the family’s holiday celebrations!
Set up a livestream or a video booth this year during the party. Family members will be able to chat with your senior all night long, and your senior will get to sit in on the fun! Or, if you prefer, you can have a post-event party with your senior, where you’ll invite other family members to recreate the holiday event and show your senior photos and videos from the night!
