While the pandemic continues on, many gym memberships remain on pause. But that’s okay! For seniors, there are plenty of alternative ways to stay active right from home. We’re sharing some of our favorite simple at-home exercises below.
Stretch It Out
Whether you stretch before or after your workout (or both), this is a key component of your workout! Stretching helps make your muscles more limber and braces them for the impact of exercise. If you want a good challenge, try some serious stretching with yoga to improve your muscle strength, balance, and coordination!
Lifting Light Weights
For light weightlifting, you’ll just need a pair of 2-3 pound dumbbells or anything of an equivalent weight you have in your home already! Light weights are perfect for arm workouts. When you combine light weight with repetition, you get more toned muscles!
Cardio and Aerobics
Cardio and aerobics help to build your stamina and improve your endurance over time. They’re also great for getting your heart rate up and blood pumping! You can do many fun and different things for a good cardio workout, like walking, running, jumping rope, and even dancing. Yes, dancing!
Calisthenics and Props
Calisthenics is bodyweight exercises, like squats and push-ups. Sometimes, you just don’t need any equipment to work out! Still, bodyweight exercises aren’t always easy, so grabbing a prop for some extra support can be a good idea. Chairs make a great prop for squat assistance. Stand in front of the chair, bend your knees, and lower yourself onto it. Then stand back up. Repeat the motion. For help with push-ups, find a clear section of any wall. Stand a few feet away and place your hands flat on the wall. Lower yourself towards the wall, and then push away from it again to complete the movement.
